Sixteen years ago, a young mother of two set out along a remote trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for a weekend backpacking trip with friends. She never made it to the rendezvous. Despite a massive police investigation, sparse evidence pointed toward a brutal murder at the hands of a twisted, unidentified killer, and the case eventually grew cold, fading from the public eye.
Now, her daughter, Carole Wolfe, works as a reporter for a Knoxville newspaper. Her career inadvertently brings her back to the shadows of her past when she is assigned to cover a contentious land battle adjacent to the park—right near where her mother vanished. The coveted tract, blanketed by dense virgin forest, belongs to an elderly couple who refuse to part with it. In response, Alex Berlineman, a ruthless New York computer magnate determined to build his new corporate headquarters on the land, schemes with corrupt local politicians to seize it through government condemnation.
At first, Carole views the proposed development as a positive step for the region, seeing the eminent domain effort as a necessary measure for local jobs and economic growth, no different than building public roads or schools. Her stance begins to shift at a high-profile reception hosted in Berlineman’s honor. After Berlineman’s inappropriate advances force her to pull away, she finds refuge in a conversation with Jake Whaley, a sharp political science professor who bears an uncanny resemblance to an Indiana Jones–era Harrison Ford, who himself is shrouded in an aura of mystery.
Intrigued by Jake’s insights as he spars with local politicos over institutional power and education, Carole starts to see through the developer’s polished façade. What begins as a routine reporting assignment soon spirals into a dangerous pursuit, threatening to expose the hidden ties between high-level corruption, the contested mountain forest, and the unsolved tragedy of her mother’s death. Will she be able with Jake’s help to escape the clutches of eco-terrorists, her mother’s killer and save the farm for the charming elderly couple?
